Riyadh Metro can make a city break easier, particularly when your hotel and sightseeing stops sit along the same line. It also connects King Khalid International Airport with the city. However, the useful comparison is the complete journey from your starting point to your destination, including station access, changes and the final stretch outside the station.
Before choosing accommodation or buying a longer pass, check your actual itinerary. A hotel near a station entrance can be convenient; a hotel in the same district may still require a car. This guide explains how to use Riyadh Metro and where another transport option fits better.

Riyadh Metro Tickets and Prices

Riyadh Metro tickets are available for different periods, so choose according to how often you will use public transport during that period.
| Pass duration | Regular | First Class |
| Two hours | SAR 4 | SAR 10 |
| Three days | SAR 20 | SAR 50 |
| Seven days | SAR 40 | SAR 100 |
| 30 days | SAR 140 | SAR 350 |
Regular passes cover standard metro travel and buses. First Class passes add access to the metro’s First Class cabins and include regular bus journeys. Choose the class you intend to use; a regular fare does not provide First Class access.
Activation and the Darb card
Pass validity begins when activated through validation or in the app, rather than simply when purchased. Check the displayed expiry before activating a multi-day product: do not assume “three days” guarantees exactly 72 hours from any activation time.
A physical Darb card costs SAR 10 to obtain. That purchase is separate from the fare you need for travel. Ask the ticket office to confirm the card charge and travel product before paying.
Which pass should you buy?
Count separate two-hour travel periods, rather than stations or changes. A return journey after a long museum visit may fall outside the original pass.
For regular fares, five two-hour passes total SAR 20, matching a three-day pass. If you expect six such travel periods within three days, the three-day option costs less. Two short travel periods over that visit cost SAR 8, making separate passes cheaper. These examples compare published pass prices, without assuming automatic contactless fare capping.
Children under six accompanied by a paying adult travel free. If your child is exactly six, confirm eligibility before buying: official pages use different wording at that age boundary.
How to Use Riyadh Metro: Step by Step

- Plan the complete journey: Enter your destination in the Darb app and inspect the proposed combination of metro, bus and walking. Confirm the correct branch or entrance of your destination.
- Identify the line and direction: Note its number, colour and destination shown on the platform. Check that your stop appears ahead in that direction.
- Choose your payment method: Buy the appropriate travel product through the app or station facilities, or use a supported contactless bank card or payment-enabled device. The app is helpful but not compulsory.
- Check activation and validation: Follow the instructions for your chosen ticket medium at the gate. Ask staff before activating if you are unsure about expiry or travelling with children.
- Enter and board the correct cabin: Follow the class and other carriage signs, allow passengers to leave, then board.
- Change lines using interchange signs: Follow the next line’s colour and number, then recheck direction. A crossing on a diagram alone does not establish a usable interchange.
- Choose the exit for your destination: Check the street side before leaving. An unsuitable exit can add a difficult crossing or an unnecessary detour.
If contactless payment fails, use the station’s ticket facilities or request assistance. Do not assume every overseas card or mobile wallet will work.
Riyadh Metro Map and Lines

The six Riyadh Metro routes form a network across different parts of the city. The table below gives orientation; it is not a substitute for a live journey plan.
| Line | Colour | General route |
| 1 | Blue | SAB Bank–Ad Dar Al Baida, through the Olaya and central Riyadh corridor |
| 2 | Red | King Saud University–King Fahad Sport City, along King Abdullah Road |
| 3 | Orange | Jeddah Road–Khashm Al An, across southern Riyadh |
| 4 | Yellow | Airport Terminals 1–2–King Abdullah Financial District |
| 5 | Green | Ministry of Education–National Museum |
| 6 | Purple | King Abdullah Financial District–An Naseem |
Use the official geographic map of Riyadh Metro lines for network orientation, then check station availability and your actual route in Darb. A geographic dataset is not a live disruption notice.
For an airport journey towards Olaya, KAFD is the important connection between Yellow and Blue. Other useful interchanges include National Museum for Blue and Green, and Qasr Al Hokm for Blue and Orange. Check current station names in the planner because English spellings can differ between maps and signs.
Riyadh Airport Metro: Getting to Your Hotel
The Riyadh airport metro uses Yellow Line 4. Airport station groups serve Terminals 1–2, Terminals 3–4 and Terminal 5. Follow the signs for the station serving your actual arrival terminal.
Check your airline’s arrival information shortly before travel. Terminal allocations changed during 2026, so an older description identifying a terminal solely as domestic or international may mislead you.
The airport metro guide and fare information provides terminal access details and published ticket options.
Plan from the terminal to the hotel entrance

For a hotel along the Blue Line, a typical route involves Yellow Line to KAFD and a change to Blue. A different hotel may require another route or a car for the final section. Confirm the hotel’s exact address before deciding.
There is no single useful journey time for “Riyadh airport to city centre”: Olaya, KAFD and the historic centre are different destinations. Compare the planner’s estimate for your hotel, including changes and walking, with a direct road journey.
Allow for immigration, baggage collection and reaching the station. Your flight’s landing time is not the time you will board a train. With substantial luggage, several changes or a late arrival, a direct transfer may be easier.

Getting to Riyadh Attractions by Metro
Start with the venue entrance, then work backwards to a suitable station. The options below are planning points; they do not promise a short, step-free pavement route to every entrance.
| Destination | Station to consider | Line | Completing the journey |
| KAFD | KAFD | Blue, Yellow, Purple | Check the route to the specific building or venue |
| Saudi National Museum and historical centre | National Museum | Blue, Green | Check the museum entrance and pedestrian route; take a car onward if unsuitable |
| Masmak and the historic Qasr Al Hokm area | Qasr Al Hokm | Blue, Orange | Confirm access to your chosen heritage site and its entrance |
| Boulevard venues | Depends on the exact venue | Plan individually | Allow for onward road transport; do not assume direct metro access |
| At-Turaif and Bujairi in Diriyah | No direct station confirmed for these entrances | Plan individually | Arrange an onward car journey or a direct transfer |
| Qiddiya attractions | No direct metro connection confirmed | — | Plan separate road transport |
For Boulevard and other event destinations, use the exact venue named on your ticket. Our Riyadh Season guide helps you organise the entertainment part of your stay. Treat a future line extension as unavailable until passenger service is explicitly confirmed.
Riyadh Metro Timings and Return Journeys

The published operating update sets Riyadh Metro opening hours at 5:30am–midnight, Saturday to Thursday, and 10am–midnight on Friday. Check the Darb app before travelling, particularly early or late: the airport information page still displays a general 6am–midnight window, and this review could not independently reopen the original operating notice. ajel.sa
Use these Riyadh Metro timings for initial planning, then confirm your specific departure. Midnight is not a guaranteed time to start a journey involving changes. Check that the connecting train will still be available, and leave a margin for moving between platforms.
Do not assume an event ticket includes transport or that service will be extended after a concert. Decide on a return option before leaving your hotel.
Where to Stay Near Riyadh Metro
Choose a particular property by its entrance and your itinerary, rather than assuming an entire district is convenient.
| Area to investigate | Best suited to | What to verify |
| Olaya, around Blue Line stations | Visitors combining central dining, shopping and city sightseeing | The actual pedestrian route from hotel reception to a station entrance |
| KAFD and its immediate surroundings | Visitors prioritising the financial district or Yellow Line airport access | Whether your building has a practical route to KAFD station |
| Al Murabba and the National Museum area | Travellers focusing on museums and older central districts | Station access, evening surroundings and onward travel to northern venues |
| King Abdullah Road near Red Line stations | Travellers with several destinations along that corridor | Which station serves the hotel and how often other outings require changes |
A map pin can hide a large road, boundary wall or entrance on the opposite side of a building. Ask the hotel for the pedestrian route, including accessible access if required.

Riyadh Metro vs Taxi vs Private Transfer
| Option | Particularly useful when | Factor to consider |
| Metro | You travel light and both ends have practical station access | Changes, opening hours and the final approach |
| Taxi or ride-hailing | You need a flexible journey directly to an entrance | Traffic, pickup arrangements and vehicle capacity |
| Prearranged private transfer | You want to coordinate an arrival, group or planned outing | Confirmed pickup details, luggage space and booking terms |
For one traveller with a small bag, metro can be an economical choice. For several people, compare the combined fares and any connecting car journey with one suitable vehicle. Do not assume a standard car will accommodate everyone and their suitcases.
You can also mix modes: metro for a convenient central outing, a car for Diriyah and a transfer for an early flight. Include those connections in your Saudi Arabia trip budget.
Practical Tips

- Check luggage acceptance: Confirm current limits with staff or customer care before relying on metro for a large suitcase. This review could not verify a current operator size or weight allowance.
- Plan accessible access throughout: Stations have lifts, wide gates and wheelchair-compatible platform access. Check the pavement route and your destination too; station facilities alone do not establish an accessible journey.
- Follow onboard rules. Do not eat or drink on the train. Keep carried refreshments closed and spill-proof, and follow cabin signs.
- Keep routes clear. Position bags so they do not obstruct doors or movement, and let passengers alight before boarding.
- Ask for help. Use station staff, ticket-machine assistance or public transport customer care on 19933. Royal Commission for Riyadh City
